My mother bought several dishes like this in travels around the US. She thinks they may have been used to receive calling cards, but she is not sure.

These are possibly calling card receivers from around 1900. My mother collected several of these in travels around the US. She was never certain of their function, but bought them because they were unusual and she liked them. The photos are examples of ceramic dishes, possibly Majolica, but she also has other similar dishes that are made of cut glass. We would appreciate any information regarding the exact function of these dishes and some idea of value.
