Description

This is 1904 sheet music. Copywrite by A. Durand & Fils in Paris. The title is "A Children's Corner". It was composed and signed by Claude Debussy. I've seen unsigned copies selling for $19.95. Will the signature increase its value? To What amount?

The sheet music is used and in good condition. 1" tear at bottom of binding and nick taken out of the front page near signature and date.

1908 Sheet Music "Children's Corner" by Claude Debussy

Item Description:
This is an original 1908 edition of "Children's Corner" (Coin des Enfants) sheet music, composed by Claude Debussy and published by A. Durand & Fils in Paris, France. The title page indicates it is a Petite Suite pour Piano Seul (a small suite for solo piano). This specific copy is notable for bearing Debussy's autograph signature and date (Juillet 1908).

Distinguishing Features:

  • Signature: Signed by Claude Debussy, dated July 1908, on the cover.
  • Condition:
    • Overall good condition for its age.
    • Includes a 1-inch tear at the bottom of the binding and a small nick near the signature.
  • Publication Details:
    • Copyrighted by A. Durand & Fils, Paris, 1908.
    • Contains distribution markings from Elkan-Vogel Co., a U.S.-based music distributor.
    • Dimensions: 12" x 9".

Historical Context:
"Children's Corner" is one of Debussy's most famous piano compositions, written as a gift for his daughter, Chouchou. Each movement portrays a child's perspective on life, toys, and play, with titles like "Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum"and "Golliwogg's Cakewalk" reflecting Debussy's innovative style and humor.

The first edition of this sheet music was published in 1908, making this copy highly valuable to collectors. An autograph from Debussy further elevates its rarity, as signed copies of his works are exceedingly scarce.

Market Value:

  1. Unsigned Copies:
    • Unsigned 1908 editions in good condition sell for approximately $20 to $50, depending on rarity and demand.
  2. Signed Copy by Debussy:
    • Autographed sheet music by Debussy is exceptionally rare, and collectors place significant value on such items.
    • Signed copies of Debussy's compositions typically fetch between $3,000 and $6,000, depending on the condition, provenance, and the prominence of the signature.
    • The condition issues (binding tear and nick) may slightly reduce the overall value but would still place this copy in the range of $3,500 to $4,500.
  3. Factors Influencing Value:
    • Condition: While the signature is intact, the minor damages should be noted in any sale or appraisal.
    • Provenance: The distribution stamp (Elkan-Vogel Co.) may enhance interest for U.S.-based collectors.

Recommendations:

  • Professional Appraisal:
    • Seek an appraisal from a qualified music memorabilia expert or auction house specializing in signed works of art and music.
    • This will confirm authenticity and help establish a formal value for insurance or resale.
  • Preservation:
    • Store the sheet music in a climate-controlled environment.
    • Use acid-free archival materials to prevent further deterioration.
  • Authentication:
    • A recognized authority in autographs (e.g., PSA/DNA or a similar service) could authenticate the signature for added credibility in resale or auction.

Conclusion:
This signed 1908 copy of Claude Debussy’s "Children's Corner" is a remarkable and rare collector’s item. The autograph significantly increases its value, with an estimated worth of $3,500 to $4,500. A professional in-person appraisal is strongly recommended to validate the signature and condition, ensuring a more accurate valuation.
