Re: 1940s sideboard / drinks cabinet

OK, You have lucked out. You are hearing from Guaranteed Summers Production Number 4. Let me explain.

This sideboard was made by Jacob Summers & Sons (Furniture) Ltd., of Tottenham, North London (UK). Jacob was my grandfather, but my father Jack Summers was running the factory when this piece was made. It is made just Post WW2. The CC41 symbol on the back signifies that it's manufacture conformed to the Government's wartime restrictions on furniture production and design know as "Utility Furniture". The Guaranteed Summers Production label was used only on post-war production pieces. Being the 4th child in our family, my mother used to refer to me as "Guaranteed Summers Production number 4!

The factory switched to war work in 1939-40 producing wooden Ammunition Boxes for the Ministry of Supply. Only after 1945 did the factory begin to retool for furniture production. This was therefore produced sometime after easing of design restrictions in 1948 and before the factory closed shortly after the death of my grandfather in 1950. For further information on post war production may I suggest that you visit my Facebook Page covering the history of the Company called:

Jacob Summers & Sons -Furniture Ltd

Under the opening exterior photo of the factory click on the tab entitled "Photos"

Next click on the right hand tab entitled "Albums"

Then scroll down to the Album called Post -War Production. There you will see other post -war piece carrying the same label as does yours. may I have your permission to add your photos to this Facebook directory.

Sincerely, Harold Summers
