Put a magnet to it...Cast Iron, if it attracts the magnet; Bronze if it does not attracts a magnet. Most antique Buddha heads are made of Bronze with gilt (gold overlay).
i think it's Japanese, possibly from the Nara period. if I were you, I'll send photos to Christie's to see if it something they'll sell and offer you an appraisal.
