Description This intriguing wax portrait is apparently from the Schwabenland region in the southwest of Germany. The inscription from the bottom translates to "I am a fine musician and I come from Schwabenland". I have read that hand-crafted Schwabian wax sculptures and portraits were produced from the late 18th Century to the mid 19th Century. The gilded wooden frame and cardboard backing are joined by staples; and there is an inscription penciled upside-down on the backing referencing a "Frau Jennigs", and what appears to read "1918, 50". The frame and the wax work appear to be a mismatch, however, as the musicians at each end of the troupe are crowded into the frame. Exterior dimensions are 32 cm (h) and 33 cm (w). I will respectfully appreciate any expert information.

Please excuse the cropped photo of the item. I repeatedly got an error message that my photo of the entire wax carving was too large a file as it was over 2 megabytes. I will continue to attenpt to post a photo of the framed carving in its entirety.
