Description

This toys is from late 1960s I believe. Give to our family as a gift. The donkey is about 20 inches tall, about 15 inches in the saddle. It sits on an aluminum tube rocker which is about 36 inches  long.  The donkey is gray and black with a Mexican blanket for a saddle a a reign. It has an aluminum tube through the back of the neck for handles but plastic handles are gone. The tail is hanging on just barely.

Description:
This is a charming vintage children’s rocking donkey toy, estimated to be from the late 1960s. The donkey is covered in a coarse gray and black fabric, with black plush ears, hooves, mane, and tail. It features exaggerated cartoon-like plastic eyes and is accessorized with a braided yarn bridle and reins, as well as a woven Mexican-style saddle blanket with fringe.

The rocking base is made of tubular aluminum, an industrial design choice typical of mid-century children’s toys. The base still appears structurally intact, though the original plastic handles are missing from the exposed aluminum bar extending through the neck. The tail is also showing signs of detachment.

Dimensions:

  • Height: 20" at the ears
  • Saddle Height: ~15"
  • Base Length: 36"
  • Weight: Under 10 lbs

Condition:
Good vintage condition. Structurally sound but with notable wear:

  • Missing plastic handles
  • Tail is loose
  • Some fraying on the saddle blanket
  • Slight surface fading on fabric consistent with age

Historical Context:
Rocking animals were popular mid-century toys, especially in the postwar era when industrial materials like metal tubing became commonplace in home goods. This particular piece’s hand-crafted charm, use of folk textile motifs, and sturdy materials suggest it may have been either a boutique manufacturer piece or even handmade. The Mexican saddle-style suggests influence from Southwestern design, which surged in popularity during the 1950s–1970s in U.S. home decor.

Value Estimate (as of 2025):

  • Retail/Collector Value: $100–$200 USD
  • Auction Value: $75–$125 USD
  • Insurance Replacement Value: ~$225 USD

Due to the handmade appearance and regional textile use, the piece may attract buyers interested in mid-century toys, Americana, or folk art.

Recommendation:
If seeking restoration or authentication for resale or preservation, you may wish to consult a vintage toy specialist or folk art dealer. For professional appraisal or valuation, consider reaching out to the National Antique Toy Collectors Association or local antique toy shows.
