Appraisal of two very old dolls.

By Fzohra, 22 November, 2013
Description

I have 2 dolls very old, I believe it goes to the 1800's. The arms are attached to the body with metal screws. It is made out of porcelain or very old wood. I couldn't tell . It doesn't have any real hair. It is just painted. One of them have porcelain feet but the other one has feet made out of stuffed fabric. They both still be in good conditions. I attached some pictures for both of them to check them. I don't know any thing about them. They are not dressed. Both of them. I did buy them from a thrift store.

Re: Appraisal of two very old dolls.

Your little dolls are called Mama Dolls.  They were made between 1920-1940.  The tem Mama Doll came into play because many of these dolls hade a voice box placed inside the stuffing and when you tipped the doll it made a sound very much like a baby saying Mama.  The material they are made of is called composition which is a wood product, then painted over with a hard enamel paint.  They can be repaired and brought back to looking new again.  If this is something you want to do look for a "Doll Doctor" and they'll be able to give you an estimate on the cost to repair them.  I hope this helps, they are cuties.
