I found this in the basement of a Victorian mansion I was hired to clean out in St. Louis, Mo. I have no basis for any opinion I may have about it other than what I can observe about its construction. It appears to be cast metal and then bronze plated. I don't think the legs are original because the knobs on the bottom appear to be where the original legs went and someone later welded these legs onto the corners. It is about 48 inches long, 28 inches wide and 24 inches tall. Extremely heavy, 80 pounds or more. The intriguing part is the holes. Was it an altar or ceremonial piece? A gaming table? Or just some 1960-70's knockoff that somehow made it into a well to do families basement? I know its at least that old because I found it in the early 80's and the patina was on it already. I genuinely appreciate your time and any information you may have that could help solve a nearly half century old mystery.
