I love this plate with a man and his dogs (not sure what breed they are), it has a hanger and is hand painted I beleive, you can see what I think are brush strokes in the glaze. The white areas like the white dog and clouds are a very shiny glaze while the other colored areas are more of a matte finish.
There are a few tiny pits? tiny holes about the size of a needle/toothpick? There is a tiny scratch on the mans arm only in the glaze, not deep. Not sure if considered mint or excellent condition. There are no chips (could send more/better pictures.)
On the back you can see a bluish cast under the white glaze, not sure if this means something. and the marking is B & C with something after this. I've searched and searched and can't find it or the artists name. I would love to find out more about the plate or painter, value?

Re: B&C plate with dogs, man
Irish Wolfhounds? B&C probably just made the blank plate. There is a B&Co. that made porcelain in France for quite a few good retailers.
Can you get a better shot of his signature maybe we can figure out who it is.
Re: B&C plate with dogs, man
Hi KathyBeh,
thanks so much for all your help.
I'm new at the site, I added a photo of the signature (I hope it worked right) and now that I looked again it may not be spelled Gavin?
Re: B&C plate with dogs, man
Looks like "L.Gauvin" which is a french name. He or she could be Canadian as well.
I searched for that name as well as Gavin, Garvin, Jarvin, Jauvin and found no artists, no art under images. I searched for Irish Wolfhound art, plates and just hunting men art etc.
Whoever it is they are really good and you would think something would show up somewhere. I always look on ebay with different search terms too. I saw nothing.
I wonder if it is a copy of some other artist hand painted on the plate by Gauvin. Who knows.
Keep it up, you may find something. If you do post it so I can see please.
Re: B&C plate with dogs, man
When I first got the plate I searched on and off for months, then gave up for several years and just enjoyed the plate, now here I am again :)
The thing is my aunt was elderly and had to have had the plate for many years it was stowed away, it looks old so I don't know.
I've found several references to women painting on plates, but like you say the artist is no where to be found.
thank you for your time and help, if I do find something I'll post it.
Re: B&C plate with dogs, man
Your pottery mark reads "B & Co." and is from L. Bernardaud & Company, a producer of French Limoges. They began manufacturing in 1900, so you at least know that the piece is 20th C. The company went through a major re-organization in 1955, and one of the Bernardaud sons brought in numerous gifted artists around that time. They put out some of their best work then, I am going to guess that your plate is very likely from that period.
To research the name of your artist, which is, indeed, L. Gauvin, one of the tricks I use that is most effective is to take the artist's last name, the type of work you are researching (in this case, either "pottery" or "ceramics"), then run a Google, not under the usual information search perimeters, but by using the Google "Images" search engine, instead. That way, if there are any photos of any artwork posted anywhere on the internet, you will have a photo of it come up in your search. So, in this case, you would want to be prepared to run at least two searches using Google's "Images" files, one using the words "Gauvin pottery," and if that does not turn up anything, you can then try "Gauvin ceramics." (Or vice-versa, of course.)
Since you now also know the name of the company who makes the ceramics, you can use that additional information for further searches. In this case, using "Bernardaud Co. Gauvin." (Again, just be sure to use the "Images" search engine, and not the usual information files.) If there is any photo on the internet concerning your artist, you will see it come up this way. It may take going through several dozens pages of photos, but if it is there, you'll know it.
Unfortunately, do remember that many of these European artists only worked for these pottery companies for short periods, so while the work may be excellent, it is entirely possible for you to have the first piece that can be attributed to him or her being discussed and/or sold.
