"Bullet" Ashtray

By evercollector2, 10 September, 2010
Description

This ashtray has been a mystery to me since I got it last week. It is solid brass at the base, with an ornate copper ring around it. On this base are four rifle bullets, which are fastened to the base with four copper decorative fittings. Sitting atop the bullets is what appears to be the re-formed head of an artillary shell, surrounding by affixed copper border. On top of all this, there are 2 British shillings welded on the top of the shell/ashtray. One coin is from 1911, the other from 1933. There was a third coin but someone broke it off before I came across the object.  There are no markings on it anywhere I can see. It looks like "trench art" from WWI, but the 1933 shilling and the intricacy of it tells me it was more likely a British, WWI vet that came home with one heck of a talent.
