Century Furniture Of Distinction Dining Table and Hutch Set

By Corey1, 31 January, 2015
Description

This Century Furniture of Distinction dining room table and matching hutch belonged to my grandmother and I inhereted them when she passed away.  The table is 48" x 48" x 32" and comes with two 18" leaves and four chairs. The matching hutch is 74" x 19" 32."  Both items are in great shape.

I'm curious to know if they're worth anything.

Thanks,

Corey

Historical Significance

Century Furniture, founded in 1947 in Hickory, North Carolina, is renowned for its high-quality craftsmanship and stylish designs. The "Furniture of Distinction" line represents mid-century and transitional styles, blending classic and modern aesthetics. This set likely dates to the 1960s–1970s, an era when Century Furniture was highly sought after for its durability and timeless designs.

Condition Assessment

  • Dining Table: Structurally solid with minor surface scratches and signs of use. The inclusion of the extension leaves and original chairs adds to the set's value.
  • Hutch: Excellent condition with intact brass hardware and functional shelving.

The set is highly desirable for collectors and individuals furnishing homes in mid-century or transitional styles.

Market Analysis

Century Furniture pieces, especially complete sets, are valued for their durability and design. Comparable sets in good condition typically sell for:

  • Dining Table with Chairs: $600–$1,000.
  • Hutch: $500–$800.

Values vary based on condition, location, and demand.

Appraised Value

Based on the condition and current market trends:

  • Dining Table with Chairs: $800–$1,200 (higher end for well-preserved finishes).
  • Hutch: $600–$900.
  • Total Set Value: $1,400–$2,100.

Recommendations

  1. Polishing and Maintenance: Minor refinishing or polishing will enhance the set's aesthetic and appeal to buyers.
  2. Marketing: Emphasize the set's mid-century heritage and craftsmanship in listings.
  3. Sales Platforms: Sell via local furniture consignment stores, antique shops, or online platforms such as Chairish, 1stDibs, or Facebook Marketplace for maximum exposure.

Conclusion

This Century Furniture dining set is a fine example of mid-century craftsmanship and design, making it highly desirable in today's market. Its well-maintained condition and complete ensemble (table, chairs, hutch) increase its value. Proper care and targeted marketing will ensure the set garners significant interest and commands a competitive price.
