Chinese Clock

My father collected clocks and I am going through his belongings since he moved to memory care for Alzheimer's.  I don't have a lot of information on the clock.

Chinese-Inspired Mantel Clock

Description:
This is a stunning mantel clock with a Chinese-inspired design, featuring intricate decorative elements. The clock is constructed with a brass or gilded frame and adorned with Cloisonné-style enamelwork on the pillars and dial. The enamel detailing includes vibrant floral patterns, which are consistent with traditional Chinese decorative motifs. The clock measures approximately 12 inches tall by 9 inches wide (as per the provided information). Its condition is described as good, suggesting it is well-preserved with minimal wear.

The clock is topped with an urn-like finial, flanked by smaller decorative finials on either side. These features, combined with the gilded columns and enamelwork, reflect an elegant and high-quality design, indicative of a late 19th or early 20th-century French or European interpretation of Chinese artistic styles, a movement known as Chinoiserie.

History and Context

While the exact maker or origin of this clock is not specified, such pieces were highly fashionable during the 19th and early 20th centuries when Western artisans adopted Chinese and East Asian design elements into luxury goods. Many French clockmakers, especially during the 19th century, incorporated Cloisonné and Chinoiserie motifs into their timepieces, which were highly sought after by European aristocracy and collectors.

Your father’s purchase of this clock from a clock auction suggests it was considered a valuable piece, possibly made by a skilled European clockmaker or as part of a high-end reproduction line emulating this style.

Condition

The clock is in good condition:

  • The gilding and enamelwork appear intact, with no major visible damage or wear in the provided image.
  • The glass casing is clean and free of cracks.
  • The mechanism condition is not mentioned; if operational, it will enhance the clock’s value significantly. If not, restoration may be required but should not significantly diminish its appeal as a collectible item.

Comparable Sales and Value

Clocks of this type, combining Cloisonné-style enamelwork, gilt brass, and Chinoiserie motifs, are highly collectible. Similar pieces often fall within the following ranges:

  • Well-maintained and functional examples: $800–$1,200 at auction or retail.
  • Non-functional or minor wear/damage: $600–$800.

Given that your father paid $700, it suggests the clock was either purchased at a fair price or slightly below market value, depending on its functionality.

Recommendations for Selling

To maximize the clock’s value:

  1. Confirm Functionality: Determine if the clock is operational. If not, consider having it inspected by a clock repair specialist.
  2. Search for Maker’s Marks: Look for any inscriptions, stamps, or engravings on the back, base, or movement. These could significantly affect the clock’s value if linked to a renowned maker (e.g., Japy Frères, Vincenti, or other French clockmakers).
  3. Provide Dimensions: Exact measurements would be helpful for potential buyers.
  4. Highlight Enamelwork: The quality and condition of the Cloisonné detailing are key selling points.

Current Estimated Value

Based on the description and visible features, the clock’s current value is estimated at $800–$1,000, assuming it is in working condition. If it is non-functional, the estimated value would be $600–$800.

Conclusion

This Chinese-inspired mantel clock is an elegant piece that reflects the craftsmanship and design trends of the late 19th or early 20th century. Its Cloisonné-style enamelwork and Chinoiserie elements add to its decorative and collectible appeal. If the mechanism is operational and provenance (e.g., maker’s marks) can be determined, it could command a higher price in the current market.
