French Vaisselier

By instappraisal@…, 18 November, 2024
Description

We bought this cabinet a while back and are curious if anyone knows anything more about it. There aren't any markings on it, but the person we bought it from said it had a tag saying 1810 when they purchased it. It seems to look like french provincial furniture we've found, but I don't know enough to be sure. It's in pretty good shape and we really enjoy the item, but I'd love to know more
about it.

French Vaisselier

Description

This is a French Vaisselier, a piece of furniture traditionally used for displaying and storing dishes and other kitchenware. The design suggests it could be from the French Provincial style, common in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The decorative motifs, elegant lines, and craftsmanship indicate its European origins.

Category

European Furniture

Medium

The piece appears to be constructed from oak or walnut, both commonly used in French furniture from this period. The warm tone and visible wood grain support this.

Distinguishing Marks

No markings are visible on the piece, which is not uncommon for furniture of this age. Older French furniture frequently lacks manufacturer marks but often features regional stylistic elements, such as floral carvings or ornate paneling.

Condition

The condition is good, with minimal signs of wear. There are some small imperfections consistent with its age, such as minor cracks in the wood and evidence of past woodworm activity, which is typical for furniture of this era.

Size and Dimensions

  • Height: 91 inches
  • Width: 74 inches
  • Depth: 19 inches

Date Period

Based on the style and construction, this piece likely dates from the late 1700s to early 1800s. The original seller's claim of 1810 seems plausible, though additional verification would be ideal.

History

French Vaisseliers became popular during the 18th century, primarily in rural areas. These cabinets were both functional and decorative, reflecting the wealth and taste of their owners. This piece's intricate carvings suggest it belonged to a family of some means. It may have originated in a region such as Brittany or Normandy, known for its skilled woodworkers.

Current Valuation

Given its size, style, and condition, the current market value for a piece like this would likely range between $2,500 and $4,500. The valuation could increase depending on further authentication or if it's tied to a specific historical period or region.

Recommendations

  • Authentication: Engage a specialist in European antiques to confirm its origins and age.
  • Restoration: A light cleaning or minor repairs by a professional conservator could enhance its value.
  • Display: This piece would make an excellent focal point in a dining room or kitchen.
  • Hope this helps. It’s a beautiful piece so I would definitely treasure it if you don’t sell it.
