Originally mounted on a very nice mahoghany plaque, I used to think it was a fountainhead, however now I believe it was a very large doorknocker as there are squared notches on each side of his mouth.

History
This belonged to my Great Aunt Gertrude Thorner, who was born in the 1880's, served as a nurse in Britain during World War I, and settled in Great Neck, NY once she came back stateside. She collected very many things, mostly older curiousities. It's possible she brought this back from Europe when she returned from the war. My dad inherited it from her when she passed in the 1970s. Unfortunately, I dont know anything else about this.
