John C. Hare watercolor

By verytallguy, 19 October, 2008
Description

This is a John C. Hare painting watercolor painting, titled "Canal in Ghent" I am assuming, based on my internet research that Ghent is Ghent, Belgium. The painting is signed on the bottom right corner and isn't dated.

Re: John C. Hare watercolor

Although the signature and style appear authentic, this is the only example I've seen where he used his middle initial in the signature.  There is also a Ghent, Virginia (a suburb of Norfolk) that may be a more likely location for the subject.  My decidedly unexpert guess would be anywhere from $800-$1200.00 at auction.

Re: John C. Hare watercolor

I own 3 watercolors by John Hare, they are all signed John Hare in the lower right corner. I purchased them in the spring of 2008 at an estate sale. The owner of the art had all of the letters he had received from Mr. Hare, he purchased them all from the artist in March of 1950. The title of each is handwritten on the mat. Mr. Hare mailed 3 large, 10 medium and 8 of the small watercolors. He says in the letter that he is sending more than they had requested, so that there will be more variety from which to choose. Mr. Hare was living in Savyville, L. I, New York on Willow Street.
In 1950, he was selling the larger ones (14 by 17) for $40.00, the medium size for $20 (11 3/4 by 9 1/2) and the smallest watercolors for $10 (8 1/4 by 7)
The three I own are the smaller ones, 2 are of the Cape and one
is of the Maine coast.
All of his letters were signed John Hare.

Re: John C. Hare watercolor

I have a very similar picture, most probably from the same location. It too is signed "John C. Hare". The biographical information on the back says that he traveled and studied in Europe, including Belgium. My parents bought it around 15 years ago from a local gallery. The painting is 21x27 inches. The back of the painting says it was originally sold by Wunderly Bros. of Pittsburgh, PA. I have no idea what my parents paid for it.
