This one is similar and so might have some helpful info http://www.thepirateslair.com/432-huge-dome-top-trunk.html I don’t know if it sold for the price shown. I was at a yard sale last weekend and saw a trunk I couldn’t identify going for $200. @lovejoy can probably tell you what they go for at auction.

Usually, I find trunks with the price you said but this one I'm unsure about because the Brass Lock Dated 1868. Thanks

Patents are basically a design license that allows a manufacturer the exclusive right for it's production. Typically from country to country the length of the patent protection varies but around 15-17 years was about the norm, so this one could have been made from 1868-to the early 1880's. These dome/hump tops were made right through the 1890's, values for them peaked in the late 1980's to early 90's along with Victorian furniture, values have crashed for both since that time. At auction comparable trunks now often go for under $150.00.
