This is a very old oil painting that I believe was painted by Matthijs Bril. It's a landscape of an old man and two children viewing Roman castle ruins with a village in the valley below. The artist definitely had real talent as evidenced by the incredible detail. Matthijs was also referred to as Mattheus or Matthys and was the older brother of Paul Bril. He lived from 1550-1583, was born in Antwerp, Belgium and died in Rome. I saw some of his work on the internet and the distant hills look identical in style, plus a painting by his brother looks like it incorporates the same castle ruins. The three figures look like they are in Italian dress. I would appreciate any additional information or suggestions on how I can get it appraised. If it's the real deal I would like to see it protected for posterity. I consider it to be in very good condition for it's age.
