Description

I have a Nell Walker Warner, that appears to be a original watercolor. i don't believe it to be a print. I am not able to find anything about it via my search (also done with a photo) I did find an Oil on Canvas "Still Life Daises and Mums" Signed "Nell Walker Warner" Lower Left that it is close to identical to it. You have to look close to distinguish differences - but not too hard to see shading and shape differences. I don't believe it to be a print because it short and wide as oppose to the oil which is tall and narrow; nor can you see any canvas in it as you can in the oil painting, Also the signature is different. I am curious if it is known to be an original watercolor of hers (vs. a print) and what the value might be

Appraisal for Nell Walker Warner Watercolor

Description

This still-life painting is attributed to Nell Walker Warner (1891–1970), a prominent American artist known for her floral still lifes and landscapes. The piece features a delicately composed bouquet of flowers, including daisies and mums, rendered in a naturalistic style that reflects Warner’s signature approach to still-life painting. The medium is believed to be watercolor, as evidenced by its soft shading and lack of canvas texture, distinguishing it from her known oil works.

Condition

The painting is in excellent condition, with no visible signs of damage or discoloration. The frame measures approximately 19” wide by 16” high, with the artwork itself measuring 16” wide by 13” high. The signature in the lower corner is consistent with Warner’s style, but variations in signatures and the existence of prints necessitate expert review for verification.

Historical Context

Nell Walker Warner was highly regarded for her floral still lifes, painted in a lush, impressionistic style. Her works were widely exhibited and collected during her career, and she was a member of various art associations, including the California Art Club. While Warner is best known for her oil paintings, she also created watercolors, making this piece particularly interesting for collectors familiar with her work.

Authenticity and Appraisal

To confirm the authenticity of this artwork and determine its precise value, an in-person appraisal by a qualified art expert or appraiser is essential. The expert would:

  1. Examine the Signature: Compare the signature to verified examples of Warner’s work.
  2. Analyze the Medium: Confirm the watercolor medium and assess whether the painting is an original or a print.
  3. Review Provenance: Trace the artwork’s history of ownership for additional context.
  4. Assess Rarity: Determine whether this watercolor corresponds to known works by Warner or represents a unique addition to her oeuvre.

Without in-person evaluation, definitive attribution and valuation cannot be guaranteed.

Current Market Context

Nell Walker Warner’s works, particularly her floral still lifes, remain highly collectible. Depending on factors such as authenticity, medium, size, and condition:

  • Original Watercolor Value: $1,500–$3,000 USD (if authenticated).
  • Print Value: $100–$300 USD.

These values are general estimates based on recent auction results and market demand for Warner’s works. Authentication and provenance could significantly affect the valuation.

Recommendations

  1. Seek Expert Authentication: Contact a certified art appraiser or consult with auction houses specializing in American art for a professional evaluation.
  2. Preserve the Artwork: Maintain the painting in a controlled environment to prevent fading or damage, particularly if it is an original watercolor.
  3. Document the Provenance: Gather any history of ownership or associated documentation that may support its authenticity.

Conclusion

This painting is a visually compelling piece that aligns with the style and subject matter of Nell Walker Warner’s body of work. If authenticated as an original watercolor, it represents a significant collectible with considerable value. However, an in-person appraisal by an expert is crucial to establish its authenticity, history, and accurate market value. Let me know if you need any help in finding an appraiser.
