Oil Painting

By Anonymous (not verified), 30 June, 2008
Description

I purchased a painting over the weekend and was wondering if could tell me anything about it? Or if you knew someone else I can contact to tell me about the painting. It is signed H Hargrove. The signature is on the left side of painting, above the flowers.  It is a 9x12 on canvas and on the back is written Hargrove AP802. I have attached a picture of the painting. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Oil Painting

H Hargove is really Nicolo Sturiano,  He was born in Palermo Italy and graduated from the Wine Institute of Marsala , he came to the states around 1964  he worked as a winemaker for a vineyard in NY.  He started to paint after seeing the beauty of the american landscape.  The owners of the winery asked him to do a series for paintings for their building.  His art became more popular than is wine profession and he headed off to Greenwich Village.

You can find him at his webite hhargrove.com ,  but he is what I call a prolific artist , meaning he can whip out two to three paintings a day , he sells his pieces for 400 to 900 dollars but the secondary market has not been very kind to him , his paintings can go from 25 to 100 dollars on the after market but at most you may get someone to pay 200 dollars

Go to his site to see his bio information

Re: Oil Painting

your crazy!!! i seen hargrove on the secandary market for $25,000. he is known to be a heavy drinker, and like most artist you find him in one of his benges he sales paintings pretty cheap and it makes the art brokers mad because he under cuts them. but i know an art broker who sales alot of his paintings and they get pricey! he is the most collected living artist in the U.S. today. i have quite a few of his limited edition pieces, #1's and a #3 and a few others. i would not let them go for a few hundred!!!

Re: Oil Painting

"The Prairie Barn" stands like a sentinel, tall and proud. Hargrove has endowed this old barn with a timeless dignity. The simple stark image is very reflective of the artist's early period and it led to early comparisons to Edward Hopper and Andrew Wyeth. "The Prairie Barn" was released in 1978 as a 20 x 24, Open Edition Serigraph on canvas and each was hand enhanced by the artist. Due to the popularity, two additional sizes were introduced: 8 x 10 and 12 x 16.

http://www.hhargrove.com/picturehistory.html  Go to this link - your painting is at the top of the page. You seem to have an early piece but I haven't been able to find a price listed.

Anonymous is correct - I'd hang onto it if I were you!

It's a beautiful painting. :)

PS - Go to this link there's a phone number and address to his Gallery.

Re: Oil Painting

Thanks for the info!  I do plan to hold onto it.  I just built an addition on my house and it is now hanging in the new addition.  It is just beautiful!  Thanks again.

Re: Oil Painting

Nobody can evaluate an Oil painting online. The work of well known artists are often issued as serigraphs, prints and outright copies, both before and after their death. Paintings require a physical examination by a qualified Specialist Appraiser to determine their origins.

Yes, That's why I gave them the link to the gallery (phone number included) for them to contact. To find out for sure if what they have is the real deal. It's a beautiful piece either way.

Re: Oil Painting

I have a Hargrove "Ghost, Goblins and Goodies from 1992 that I purchased. it is signed and numbered #331/900 on the front bottom right corner of the picture. It is in excellent condition. It is 20x24 framed. Does anyone know where I can sell it and what it is worth? I also have the Certificate of Authenticity from when I bought it and the price I paid which was $205.00.  If anyone has any insight, let me know.

Re: Oil Painting

I have a Hargrove painting. It pictures part of the front of a barn and a wagon on the side of the barn. It measures 12"x16" without the frame. with the frame it's 20"x24". I paid $55 at an antique store. It is signed on the front and also on the back by Hargrove. I had it appraised and they said that at an art gallery they would ask $1,250-$2,500 and they valued mine at $1,500.
I hope this gives you some kind of idea on how much yours is worth.
