Oils On Canvas

Description

The collection consists of oil on canvas paintings, acquired at an estate sale for $125 each. The paintings are in excellent condition and feature serene landscapes and natural scenes, with ornate frames that enhance their decorative appeal. Notably, one of the paintings bears the inscription "Petersen Gold Medal Bradshaw 4/20/81", while another is marked "STYLE 689 RP, Size 8 x 10, MADE IN MALAYSIA". These inscriptions provide important clues about their origins and context.

Artistic Characteristics and Origins

  1. First Painting ("Petersen Gold Medal Bradshaw"):
    • The inscription suggests this painting may have been part of a competition or exhibition, as "Gold Medal" often refers to awards for artistic or craftsmanship excellence.
    • "Bradshaw" could be the artist's name, but additional research would be required to confirm this.
    • The date, 4/20/81, indicates it was likely created or exhibited in the early 1980s. The style and subject—lush green trees and a tranquil landscape—align with traditional landscape painting.
  2. Second Painting ("Style 689 RP, Malaysia"):
    • The "Made in Malaysia" marking and standardized "Style 689 RP" label suggest it is a mass-produced decorative artwork.
    • These pieces are often designed for home décor and not intended as unique, fine art. However, the craftsmanship and frame make it a valuable decorative item.
  3. Other Paintings:
    • The other paintings, while unsigned or illegibly signed, display detailed and vibrant compositions. The ornate frames and careful brushwork suggest they were likely created for decorative purposes or by regional artists.

Potential Value

  1. First Painting ("Petersen Gold Medal Bradshaw"):
    • If "Bradshaw" refers to a recognized artist, the painting's value could significantly increase. As it stands, it holds appeal as a decorative piece with a possible history tied to an exhibition or competition.
    • Estimated Value: $150–$400, depending on the buyer's interest and market demand.
  2. Second Painting ("Made in Malaysia"):
    • As a mass-produced decorative artwork, its primary value lies in its aesthetic appeal and ornate frame.
    • Estimated Value: $75–$150.
  3. Other Paintings:
    • The unsigned or illegible artworks, framed with ornate and gilded designs, are valuable as home décor. Without attribution to a notable artist, their resale value aligns with similar decorative oil paintings.
    • Estimated Value: $150–$400 each.

Cleaning and Restoration

  • First Painting: Cleaning may enhance its vibrancy, especially if it has been exposed to dust or grime over the years. Professional cleaning is recommended for historical or potentially valuable pieces.
  • Second Painting: Cleaning is likely unnecessary as it is mass-produced.

Recommendations

  1. Professional Appraisal:
    • The "Petersen Gold Medal Bradshaw" painting should be appraised by a qualified art expert to determine if "Bradshaw" is a known artist or linked to an art competition. This could add historical and monetary value to the piece.
    • Appraisers can also analyze other inscriptions and signatures to provide additional context for the paintings.
  2. Selling:
    • First Painting: Highlight its potential historical significance ("Gold Medal" and "Bradshaw") in listings. Platforms like eBay, Etsy, or local antique shops may attract buyers interested in unique or potentially historical art.
    • Second Painting: Market it as a decorative piece with an emphasis on its vibrant colors and elegant frame. Local marketplaces like Facebook Marketplace or consignment shops would be ideal.
    • The remaining paintings should also be marketed as high-quality decorative art, with an emphasis on their ornate frames.
  3. Preservation:
    • Avoid placing the paintings in direct sunlight or humid areas to prevent damage to the canvas or frames. Proper framing with UV-protective glass or acrylic can further preserve them.

Final Notes

While the "Petersen Gold Medal Bradshaw" painting could hold historical or artistic significance, confirming this would require in-person appraisal and additional research into "Bradshaw" and the referenced "Gold Medal." The other pieces, particularly the "Made in Malaysia" painting, are primarily decorative but retain value for their craftsmanship and aesthetic appeal. With proper marketing and care, these paintings could appeal to both collectors and home décor enthusiasts.
