Collection Of Old Washington Stamps

Item Description:
This collection includes multiple Washington stamps, many of which appear to be from the early 20th century. The stamps feature various portraits of George Washington in denominations such as 2 cents, and at least one 6-cent yellow stamp. The collection contains both used (canceled) and unused examples, with some visible wear and aging. The stamps are stored in a plastic display sheet.

Distinguishing Features:

  • Design: Predominantly red Washington stamps with one yellow Springfield, Mass. postmarked stamp.
  • Cancellation Marks: Many stamps are postmarked, indicating they were used for mail.
  • Condition: The condition varies, but most appear to have wear consistent with age, such as fading, creases, and uneven perforations.

Historical Context:
These stamps were likely issued during the early to mid-20th century, possibly between 1908 and 1940, as part of standard U.S. postage featuring President George Washington. The 2-cent red Washington stamps were extremely common during this time, produced in large quantities for regular postal use. The yellow Springfield, Mass., postmarked stamp might be a more specialized or commemorative issue, which could increase its value depending on rarity and demand.

Market Value:

  1. Individual Value:
    • 2-cent Washington Stamps: These are common and typically valued at $0.50 to $5.00 each, depending on condition, cancellation, and specific issue.
    • Yellow Springfield Stamp: If rare or commemorative, it could have a higher value, potentially $10 to $50, but further authentication is needed.
  2. Collection Value:
    • As a group, the value of the collection would be estimated at $30 to $100, primarily due to the historical significance and moderate collector interest in Washington stamps.
  3. Factors Affecting Value:
    • Rarity: If any of these stamps are rare variations (e.g., specific printing errors, limited runs), their value could increase significantly.
    • Condition: Mint, unused stamps command higher prices than canceled or worn stamps.

Recommendations for Further Evaluation:

  • Professional Appraisal:
    • A professional philatelist or stamp dealer can:
      1. Authenticate the stamps and identify rare or valuable issues.
      2. Confirm their historical significance and exact period of issuance.
      3. Provide a more accurate valuation for insurance or sale purposes.
    • Take note of any unique postmarks or printing anomalies that could make individual stamps more valuable.
  • Preservation:
    • Continue storing the stamps in protective sleeves to prevent further deterioration. Avoid handling them directly, as oils from your hands can damage the paper and ink.

Conclusion:
While most stamps in this collection are common and hold modest value, there could be hidden rarities or unique items worth significantly more. A professional appraisal is highly recommended to accurately assess their worth and historical significance.
