Carl-Harry Stålhane "Tema" Ceramic Cup by Rörstrand, Sweden
Report: Carl-Harry Stålhane "Tema" Series Ceramic Cup by Rörstrand, Sweden
Item Description
Overview and Historical Context
Carl-Harry Stålhane (1920–1990) was one of Sweden’s most acclaimed mid-century ceramic designers, known for his work with Rörstrand from the 1940s to the 1970s. He succeeded Gunnar Nylund as Rörstrand’s artistic director and was especially known for his subtle glazing techniques and minimalist Scandinavian design aesthetics.
The TEMA line is a celebrated series designed by Stålhane during the 1960s and was part of Rörstrand’s effort to modernize domestic ceramics with bold contrasts and matte finishes. The two-tone design—dark matte lower section paired with a colorful glazed top—exemplifies the Scandinavian modernist style of that period.
