Small Roll-Top Child’s Desk - Tennessee Red Cedar and Novelty Co

Description:
This is a vintage small roll-top desk, likely intended for children or use in a compact workspace, manufactured by the Tennessee Red Cedar and Novelty Company of Chattanooga, Tennessee. The desk is part of the company’s “Royal Line”, as indicated by the original maker’s mark inside the central drawer, which features a lion's head logo.

This roll-top design includes a functional tambour door that reveals cubby-style storage and a writing surface, along with one central drawer and two side drawers. It is crafted from red cedar wood, which was a signature material used by the manufacturer.

Dimensions:

  • Height: 36 inches
  • Width: 30 inches
  • Depth: 17.5 inches
  • Estimated weight: ~30 lbs

Date/Period:
Circa 1930s–1940s

Maker's Mark:

  • Label: “Royal Line” with lion’s head
  • Manufacturer: Tennessee Red Cedar and Novelty Company, Chattanooga, TN

Condition:
Very good to excellent for its age. Minor signs of use and wear are consistent with age. The roll-top mechanism appears intact and functioning. Drawer pulls may be original or early replacements.

Historical Context:
The Tennessee Red Cedar and Novelty Co. was active in the early-to-mid 20th century and was known for producing high-quality cedar chests, desks, and novelty furniture, often sold through catalogs and department stores across the southeastern U.S. Their “Royal Line” marked pieces like this one were marketed as durable yet affordable youth and home furnishings.

Comparable Sales & Value Estimate:

  • Small roll-top desks from this period typically sell for:
    • Retail/Decorative Value: $225 – $375
    • Fair Market/Auction Estimate: $150 – $250

Desks with clear provenance, maker’s marks, and good condition—like this one—command the higher end of the price range, especially to collectors of Southern-made or cedar furniture.

Recommendation:
For resale, consider listing the item on platforms such as:

  • Chairish (decorative arts and vintage furniture)
  • Etsy (vintage category)
  • Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist (local pickup)
  • eBay (with clear shipping/pickup terms)

For insurance or tax documentation, a professional appraisal by a certified appraiser (ISA or ASA) is recommended due to the documented maker and vintage nature.
