Description

This snuff box is about three inches long, 1.5 inches tall with a width of approximately 2.5 inches. A resonated old photo of a young lady in a bonnet showing her red curly hair is situated atop the case and surrounded by a raised floral design.

The left side view has a depiction of two characters in a library environment, one of a magi and the other of greater importance with a well-developed demeanor in a big feathery hat. The front view depicts people of royal nature, a king, a guard his magi and possibly his queen kneeling at his feet. Scrolling on through to the right side of the item is a guard and a spear with his dog facing towards a man of which is hovering over what seems to be a dead child, next to the man hovering is a woman with a spear drawn aiming towards to the guard and his dog. The back is a depiction of a casket while two hovers over it and the others are in prayer, however it may be the mother situated far right of the picture bidding her farewell. The inside of the snuff box has a red cotton cloth that seems partially attached to the inner walls using glue, however it maybe someone's attempt to refurbish the item.

There are no other distinguishing markings that would allow me to identify the maker of this product. The photo within the resin maybe a print as being octagon shaped marks all throughout the surface with some line's replica of the back of an American dollar bill. The gold paint on the item shows signs of deterioration in white coloring, however the raised characters and overall details of the item are intact and in great shape.

Item Overview

  • Type: Snuff box or trinket box
  • Material: Likely cast non-magnetic alloy with a gilded or gold-tone finish
  • Interior: Red fabric lining (glued in, partially detached)
  • Lid Feature: Small resin-covered portrait (likely printed), surrounded by raised rococo-style floral scrollwork
  • Relief Decoration: Multi-scene figural narrative in classical/romantic European style, possibly allegorical or historical
  • Size: ~3" (L) x 1.5" (H) x 2.5" (W)
  • Weight: ~113g / 0.25 lbs

Artistic & Historical Interpretation

The imagery on the box depicts a continuous narrative in raised relief, typical of Romanticism and Neoclassical revivalfrom the mid to late 19th century and early 20th century. The portrait under resin is styled similarly to late Georgian or Regency miniatures, but it appears to be a print rather than an original miniature painting.

The surrounding reliefs show classical architecture and figures in dramatic or moral scenes:

  • A casket and mourning figures: common in allegories of death or virtue
  • A royal court scene with kneeling queen: suggests loyalty or submission
  • A murder and confrontation scene: evokes biblical or mythological themes (possibly Judith, Medea, or a custom scene)
  • A library or study scene with scholars or magi: adds intellectual or alchemical elements

This narrative style suggests it may have been inspired by romantic historical storytelling, likely a Victorian-era revival piece

Construction & Manufacturing Clues

  • Non-magnetic alloy: Suggests spelter, pewter, or pot metal—commonly used in 19th–early 20th-century decorative items.
  • Gilded finish: Often applied to simulate bronze or gold, now showing signs of oxidation (white corrosion) and wear.
  • Resin top insert: Likely added during the early 1900s, when molded resin became more common.
  • Interior lining is glued fabric, possibly a later repair.

The craftsmanship and design suggest European origin, likely French or Austrian, and could date anywhere from 1880 to 1930

Authentication Notes

  • No maker’s marks or hallmarks visible
  • Casting quality is detailed but slightly crude in places (indicative of mass production techniques)
  • The portrait is printed and not hand-painted, reducing likelihood of 18th-century authenticity

This is almost certainly not Georgian or Regency era original, but a Revival piece made to evoke that style—a practice common in decorative arts from 1880–1930.

Estimated Market Value (as of 2025)

Based on market comparables and condition:

Condition

Estimate (USD)

Good (as shown, with wear and glued lining)

$75 – $150

Mint condition with provenance or signed

$200 – $350

These are often sold as decorative snuff or trinket boxes, and their value lies more in aesthetic appeal than rarity unless tied to a known maker (e.g., Viennese cold-painted bronzes or French ormolu artists).

Recommendation

For general insurance or resale purposes, the value range above is appropriate. If you ever discover a hidden mark, signature, or can confirm authorship (e.g., Limoges, Vienna, or noted French ateliers), the value could rise.
