By diva, 15 October, 2008
Description

The magazine is titled "Equal Justice Under Law - The Supreme Court in American Life" copyright 1965 by the Foundation of the Federal Bar Asso.  Tucked inside the magazine was a typewritten note to a Brother Valkus.  The note was written by Justice Tom C. Clark and signed "Sincerely and fraternally yours".  He began the note by saying "We of the December 1965 33 degree Honorary Class deeply appreciate the excellent ceremony of coronation.  He goes on to say that he is sending a copy of a brochure on the Supreme Court edited by the National Geographic Society and publiched by the Federal Bar Foundation. He states that "on behalf of the class it is a token of the high esteem they have for the Degree Team and in appreciation of the wonderful experience afforded each of them in being members of the 33 degree.  It notes the address and the full name of the person it is being sent to.  Further into the magazine, I found a signature card glued to the page and imprinted with the Supreme Court of the United States.  The card is signed in various blue and black inks witht he signatures of all the sitting justices of the 6th Supreme Court.

History
I found the memo in a box of books I had purchased from the Goodwill in 2007. The memo was inside a law magazine titled, "Equal Justice Under Law - The Supeme Court in American Life" copyright 1965. Inside the cover on the second page is a 4 1/2 by 3 3/4" card imprinted with black lettering from the Supreme Court of the Untied States Washington, D.C. 20543 with the original members of the sitting supreme court of that day. Inside on Page 11 the Justices are shown in a rare informal portrait. They are: Ass. Justices William J. Brennan, JHr., Potter Steward, Byron R. White, Hugo L. Black, Abe Fortas, William O. Douglas, and John M. Harlan, Cheif Justice Earl Warren, and Assoc. Justice Tom C. Clark,. The caption by the photograph states "Bound by the propriety and dignity of their office, the justices seldom grant permission for pictures of themselves in a causal pose."
