Profile picture for user Peaceturtle
By Peaceturtle, 22 February, 2016
Description

This item is approx. 17" tall and 11" wide at the top. It weighs approx 15 pounds. The top part is remarkably pure dull black, except for a couple very small white spots (pictured). I know very little about it, but it appears to depict the Sphinx of Thebes. Any insight will be apprciated. Thank you.

Re: Tazza Bronze and Unknown - Sphinx of Thebes - Greek -...

The bowl is made of jet mineral with fossilized othoceras (the white mark you refer to).  The stone used to make the bowl was likely sourced from Morocco and was part of an ancient sea bed.
