Vintage Blue and White Chinese Jardinière Cachepot

Item Description

  • Type: Jardinière / Cachepot
  • Origin: Chinese-style porcelain
  • Material: Glazed ceramic (porcelain)
  • Color: Blue and white underglaze
  • Decoration:
    • Hand-painted in traditional cobalt blue.
    • Motif features two stylized dragons flanking a flaming pearl among waves and clouds — a classic Chinese imperial symbolism associated with strength, fortune, and cosmic energy.
    • Wave border designs at the top and bottom rims, typical of late Qing Dynasty revival styles.
  • Markings:
    • Small interior blue mark visible in the photo — possibly a painter's mark or workshop batch number (not a reign mark).
    • No large reign mark or export company stamp visible.
  • Shape:
    • Broad oval body with an undulating, lobed rim.
    • Twin small handles on the sides molded into the body (subtle and integrated).

Historical Context

  • Blue and white porcelain was originally developed during the Yuan and Ming dynasties but has remained a highly desired export and decorative style into modern times.
  • Dragons with flaming pearls were a traditional theme on both imperial and commercial wares.
  • Based on the style, glaze quality, brushwork, and simplified internal mark, this piece appears to be:
    • A 20th-century reproduction of Qing-style (late 19th-century) jardinières,
    • Likely produced between the 1970s–1990s.
    • Made either in China for export or in Hong Kong/Taiwan during the booming revival of traditional porcelain aesthetics for the Western decorative market.

Condition

  • Excellent:
    • No visible chips, cracks, or glaze loss.
    • Vivid cobalt blue painting with good detail.
    • Clean gloss glaze and well-preserved interior.
    • Minor kiln specking inside consistent with authentic production methods.

Professional Appraisal Recommendation

For insurance or high-end retail sale, you could request a formal written appraisal through:

Summary

This is a vintage (c. 1970s–1990s) Chinese-style blue and white porcelain jardinière, made in homage to late Qing dynasty aesthetics. Featuring classic dragons and a flaming pearl, it offers beautiful decorative value and would appeal to collectors, decorators, and Asian-style interior designers. It’s in excellent condition and holds moderate but solid market value in today’s vintage porcelain market.
