Vintage Masonic Ring

By iliana, 30 July, 2012
Description

I have had this ring in my possession for at least 22 years.  My uncle gave it to me as a post wedding gift and said that it was and antique masonic ring of fertility.  My uncle is in his eighties today so I would think the ring is at least 50 years old.

I wear it often and have never given any thought as to it's true origin, history or value.

Vintage Masonic Ring

Description

This is a vintage Masonic ring, described as a fertility ring, gifted to the current owner approximately 22 years ago by their uncle. The ring is believed to be at least 50 years old and features a black face with gold-embossed ram’s head and other symbolic figures. The design and Masonic association add a layer of historical and collectible value to the piece.

Category

  • Jewelry and Gemstones
  • Masonic Collectibles

Specifications

  • Material: Likely gold (specific karat unknown) with black enamel or oxidized accents.
  • Design: Black face with embossed gold details, including a ram’s head and fertility-related symbols.
  • Size: Approximately 1/2 inch tall.
  • Condition: Mint (despite regular wear, no visible signs of damage or significant wear).

Historical Significance

Masonic rings have been popular among Freemasons as symbols of their membership and values. This particular ring, described as a "fertility ring," may be linked to a specific Masonic degree or order emphasizing fertility symbolism, possibly relating to agricultural or pastoral themes (e.g., the ram’s head). Such symbols also tie into broader historical and mythological contexts, reflecting themes of strength, renewal, and abundance.

Condition Assessment

The ring is in mint condition, with the gold detailing and black face intact despite frequent use. This level of preservation enhances its value.

Market Analysis

Vintage Masonic rings are highly collectible, particularly those with unique designs or symbolic significance. Factors influencing value include:

  • Age and Provenance: The ring's age (50+ years) adds historical value.
  • Design: The ram’s head and fertility theme are less common, potentially increasing interest among collectors.
  • Material: If made of gold, the value will depend on the karat and weight.

Comparable Masonic rings have sold for:

  • Common designs: $200–$500.
  • Unique or symbolic designs: $500–$1,000.
  • Rings with confirmed gold content and historical significance: Up to $1,500 or more.

Appraised Value

Based on its condition, unique design, and Masonic significance:

  • Estimated Value: $500–$800 (higher if gold content is confirmed and karat is tested).

Recommendations

  1. Gold Content Testing: Have the ring tested by a jeweler to determine its gold karat and weight, which will refine its value estimate.
  2. Further Research: Investigate the specific Masonic symbolism and origin of the fertility theme, as this could enhance its historical and collectible significance.
  3. Proper Care: To maintain its value, avoid exposure to harsh chemicals or excessive wear that could damage the gold or black face.

Conclusion

This vintage Masonic ring is a well-preserved and collectible piece, with its unique design and Masonic heritage making it highly desirable among collectors. Its value could increase with additional information about its symbolism and material composition. For accurate valuation and potential sale, consider consulting a jeweler specializing in antique Masonic jewelry or an appraiser experienced in fraternal collectibles.
