Water pot

Description

This water pot is from south east Mauritania, and is supposed to be at least 100 years old, possibly more. It was used by the village elders for a fertility ceremony, the young women wanting to get pregnant drank from the pot.

The seller told me it depicts 3 pregnant women on the vase, which means that it could not have been made after mauritania became Islamic, it would have been illegal to produce.
