What are they rug protectors in a brass box?

Description

Hi I picked this up about 35-40 years ago, I never opened it because I didn’t want to damage it. 

some things in life are better to leave as a mystery. 

I believe it contains coasters or rug protectors? 

any information would be appreciated and helpful please and thank you!

It is a heavy brass “tin” approx 3” in diameter weighing about 1/2 pound
Distinguishing marks
Engraved on the back Colonial Chair Company Chicago

With an Engraved chair on the front and where the cushions would be it was hand painted in red.

It is a bead rolled seal around the can I didn’t want to damage it and have left it in original condition.
