I'm concerned that if I go to some of the local comic book stores that I'll get ripped off. Yes I can probably go to a few stores, but I have around 50 comic books and how can I know that I won't get ripped off? Is there some way to know if there's a reputable comic book dealer in the LA area that I can trust? Thanks!

Unfortunately at some points you're going to have to get to the point of trusting someone to appraise your comic books. Â In Los Angeles there's a few reputable comic book stores that some consider top-notch. Â They are Hi De Ho Comics at 1431 Lincoln Blvd., Santa Monica, CA 90401, phone: 310-394-2820, and Comic Ink at 4267 Overland Ave., Culver City, CA 90230, phone: 310-204-3420 (be sure to ask for the owner). Â I would suggest bringing to both stores and having both appraise the value of your comic books. Â That way you can get a good overall feel if one of the valuations is way off and potentially you can find the middle range based on what you hear.
Enjoy,

Generally speaking, I have found that comic stores will greatly under value your collection of comics. They will offer you between 25% to 40% of the value.Comic stores like any business have alot of overhead. I have been a comic appraiser for 30 years and once had a comic store.I have found the fairest way to sell a collection is by consignment. This is usually in the 20% to 25% range. This way the comic store owners will grade your books fairly to maximize their profit. The other way is to find a well connected appraiser without a store(and overhead) who is well connected to private collectors and willing to sell for a smaller consignment fee.Super Heroe comics usually value much higher than cartoon books. If you would like more information to determine approximate value you can contact me at [email protected]

One of the most important factors that l left out in my previous post is that 1 or 2 comics could have more value than all the other books combined. If a comic store or dealer under values these key issues(which they do) then they can effectively acquire the non key issues at a minimum cost. Therefore it is important that you know what the key books are and their value. Again if you would like assistance in determining value, you can contact me at [email protected]

A great deal depends on the comic'c condition as well as its rarity. There are a number of online resources to look up what comics sell for, some you have to pay to access others for free, but if you have boxes of them using one of the paid sites is probably a good idea.

You can go online to most comic book web sites and get the value of each addition based on mint fair good are poor condition, and yes you will get ripped off if you are not careful. i check mine this way before i even talk to anyone about selling them. you can also purchase a value guide that has just about every comic book in them and those you can find at just about any book store.
