I have heard that it is better to keep your find in its decomposing state rather than attempt to restore it although when I look at collections they are sometimes restored to look brand new. what is best? Restore or not?
Re: Is it better to keep any antique in its original ...
It depends entirely on the type of item, it's vintage and collectors tastes. With Early American furniture it's best to leave restoration up to the experts. Values for most mass produced furniture made since the 1870's actually can be improved by restoration, as can things like cast iron garden furniture, beds, rewiring lamps etc...

Hi,
Just be careful if your antique is silver or metal and you decide to polish it up - it could have a detrimental effect on the value. Â Also, if your item has an original patina (tarnish that forms on the surface of bronze, other metals, and wood), then cleaning it can also have a significant impact on reducing the value of it - it's often better to leave something with its original look rather than clean it up. Â If you are repairing something then do as Lovejoy says, and leave it to an expert to restore.
