Painted crystal bowls

By Ebdrapak, 16 October, 2014
Description

Has been in family for decades, no identifying marks. Looking to know what the general names are for this type of glass so I can search better. Insides are bright while the outsides are very dull like you were never meant to look at them.

Re: Painted crystal bowls

This is called Goofus Glass and it from the early 1900's.  The glass is cold painted on the reverse and then covered with gold which gives it the rich look, but because this technique is cold painted the paint tends to flake off easily.  You can read all about it here http://antiques.about.com/od/glasswareothertypes/a/aa050309.htm
