Antique Duncan Phyfe Dining Table w/4 Chairs

By dancingqueen, 13 May, 2014
Description

I inherited this set from an older friend of mine.  She said it was Duncan Phyfe, but since I've been doing research, I've noticed that there was a trend to build furniture in the style of Duncan Phyfe.  There is a big difference in price between an original Duncan Phyfe and a piece built by someone else in that style.  I know that it is rare to have an actual Duncan Phyfe piece, but how can I tell the difference? Anyone know?  Any information or appraisals would be helpful.

Thank you!

Re: Antique Duncan Phyfe Dining Table w/4 Chairs

Your set is a 20th Century reproduction, in what's called the "Federal Revival style" . Duncan Phyfe was one of the best known makers during the original Federal period (1780-1830) and his name is often used in describing furniture of this type. Sets like like yours were mass produced circa 1925-1939 and today values for them is very modest, we often see comparable set table and chair sets go for well under $500.00 at auction.
