Unique carvings on this antique sofa purchased in Virginia by one of my sisters at an antique store more than 15 years ago. Dealer indicated it was "one of a kind" 18th century.
The carved woodwork extends across the top back of the sofa, which has a dual, camel back like style. Intricate carvings extends from the top front of the arms to the feet, which appears to be one solid piece. Has beads trimmed in the wood across the front length.
It is upholstered, nailhead trim around tasteful buttery gold fabric, piping around the cushions. I am sure this fabric is not origional as the sofa has matching cording around the bottom of the entire sofa, with the exception of the front legs that shows the craftsmanship of the woodwork.
I have searched high and low for a simular style but have come up empty handed. Some styles have come close...such as Victorian French Empire style but none with the hand carved woodwork as this sofa. None with tufted arms. I've seen compairable carvings on chairs with spanish origin dated back to the 15-1600's but there again...nothing quite the same.
Can anyone please give me their best educated guess of the style of this sofa, origin, time period...maybe even the maker? I have no idea what this sofa would be worth.
Re: Antique Sofa, Beautiful, Intricately Hand Carved wood...
Please...can anyone tell me anything about this sofa at all?
Thanks in advance.
