Chinese carved teak furniture

By lexus562, 21 November, 2011
Description

I did research on eBay and the internet and I only came up with new reproduction furniture that sells for hundreds and thousands of dollars. I did find very old antique carved furniture; I couldn't find anything of vintage Original Hand carved like what I have and of this quality. During my research of these items I found that many of the pieces were shipped from Hong Kong and that my pieces where shipped from Taipei, Republic of China per a business card that came with the furniture. (See Photo) When talking to people they stated that that the furniture was made for export, most were brought home by tourists or service men stationed in south East Asia. That it was hand carved and made in china and exported to the US.

History
This furniture belonged to a very close friend. It was purchased through his son that was stationed in south East Asia during the Vietnam War. My friend received the furniture in 1962. He said he had paid over $10,000 for the 7 pieces. Teak wood was very expensive back then, and still is today. I purchased them from him in 1964 when he had to go into a nursing home and it's been in my procession since that time.

Re: Chinese carved teak furniture

Such pieces have been made since the turn of the 19th Century for the export market. Furniture like this is still in production, it does not sell well in the secondary market as it does not match with Traditional Anerican furniture. Either the full room has to be decorated in this style, or not at all for it to work from a decorating standpoint. I'd suggest checking out liveauctioneers.com to find out what similar pieces sell for.
