Currier & Ives American Homestead Series

By chelle8671, 10 January, 2013
Description

We have a set of four lithographs, one for each season of the Currier & Ives American Homestead series.  We have compared the writing across the bottom to several reprints vs. ones that are claimed to be originals from a variety of online sources.  The print on ours matches that of the ones that claim to be original, and this print is different/more than that of the reprints that we have found.

I have enclosed photos of the Winter scene, including close-ups of the writing across the bottom.

History
We purchased the contents of an old Victorian house and found a cardboard mailing tube stamped with "The Homestead Building" "Nashville, TN". Inside, we found this set of four prints which do not appear to have ever been framed or exposed to light. There is yellowing on the back of the Summer print, but only half of the back...only the half the was exposed to the cardboard mailing tube. The other prints were rolled inside of hte Summer one. I attached one photo which shows about 1/2" of yellowing on the back edge of the Winter print where it apparently peeked out behind the Summer print to touch the cardboard. You can also see some minor bending in the upper right corner where the print bumped agaist the edge of the mailing tube when being pulled out.

Re: Currier & Ives American Homestead Series

I think these are reproductions. Measure the size of the image, very few of the copies are the same size as in the originals. On the originals for this series the images measure 8 x12.5" and 7-7/8ths x 12 and 3/8ths.
