Intriguing Old Glass Bottle

Profile picture for user triciam44

Description

Wanted to share this very unique item and see if anyone has seen one before or if anyone knows anything about this piece. Maybe it is nothing, but maybe it really is something special. The glass bottle has a very small piece of a soft burned wood inside it and the bottle was closed on top with only a kind of tied straw covering the small opening of the bottle. Before we disturbed it, it is clear that the small piece of wood was put inside and closed in. The bottle is very old I think because there are bubbles throughout the glass and no mark on the bottom of the bottle. There are many little pieces of debris throughout the glass and the straw on top of the bottle is crumbling when touched. It is dense and heavy. There was a very tiny square hand sewn cotton cloth packet tied around the top of the bottle and inside was a very tiny piece of folded up paper. The paper is so old it either had no writing on it or the writing is totally gone now. The paper is crumbling when touched/unfolded (we used a tweezers). The bottle was possibly covered in paper at one time, or at least now there are a very few small patches of paper on the outside of the bottle. What you see hanging from the side is the tiny pouch that was found tied around the top of the bottle. We are so intrigued by this piece and only wish there had been some writing on the paper we found. The bottle was found at an estate sale.
Does anyone have any information to help figure out what this could be?
