Large Wooden Churn

This wooden churn belonged to my grandparents. While I don't have too much information on it, I've always assumed it was American, as most their antiques are. Unsure if it is missing a piece from the lid, there is a hole and looks like it could have had something covering it at one time. Not sure what it is for, has large paddles inside, guessing a butter churn?
