Looking for information and appraisal

By kidden6968, 21 April, 2010
Description

We know very little other than dimensions. The mirror itself is 5' high and I am told the little round shelves on the sides of the mirrors were for oil lamps. There is one small drawer knob missing. All drawers open. Two small drawers, one on each side have a small compartment inside with a wooden lid with a knob. I am thinking this was for powder. The tops are white marble with the center piece set into the top. The two side pieces of marble are just set there. May have been glued originally but do not see any glue residue. I did not seem to get a clear shot of the top of the mirror which has beautiful scrollwork. Although we are looking to sell I have chosen not to sell it on line but am hoping some information and an approximate appraisal will help me sell it locally.

Re: Looking for information and appraisal

It's a Victorian example circa 1880 in the Eastlake style. the style getting its name from Charles Eastlake, who wrote a book entitled "Hints on Household Taste" in 1868. In this influential book he rejected the ornate decorations favored on earlier Victorian furniture and espoused simpler more incised rectangular lines sparingly accented with machined forms and varying wood types for decoration. The American version of this style were more ornate than Eastlake's original designs, but his name has been forever linked to this furniture ever since. Victorian Furniture is currently not selling very well, after big run ups in value during the 1980's to mid 90's.

Re: Looking for information and appraisal

Thank you so much for this information. We really didn't have any information on it including possible age. I will look over some of the auction items and appreciate the time put into your reply.
