Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican Jadeite Axe

Description
While teaching conservation ecology in Costa Rica a few years ago, I happened upon an antiques dealer in San Jose. I wanted some memento of the experience and I ended up purchasing an antique jadeite figurine cum axe. I didn't think much of this purchase until I was stopped in customs for trying to take pre-Columbian artifacts out of the country. I was eventually cleared to leave with my treasure.

Ever since this experience I have been interested in the date and origin of the piece. I am hoping that you can shed some light on this purchase.

The figure is just over 8 inches long and 1.5 inches wide at its greatest width. It appears to be unpolished jadeite. A hole has been drilled through the figure about 2 inches from the crown. The figure has human-like qualities. A seam runs vertically up the back of the figure.
