1930's or 40's bakelite chess set

By carriejo, 19 May, 2013
Description

I purchased this chess set at a yard sale this past weekend. The woman I bought it from said her parents had purchased it in Germany many years ago. The pieces are big - the king is about 5 inches, I'd say - and they have a nice heft/substantial feel to them. Shiny deep red and yellowish colors. I believe they're bakelite. The set is complete with case and board, and is in excellent condition, with the exception of a chip on one of the castles. I would like to know more about the set (I can't find ine like it online) and a truer value than what I paid. Thanks!Thanksgivings

Re: 1930's or 40's bakelite chess set

I know a very similar set. It is for sale in Switzerland. In the box the name "Ayres" is written. Can you see the same in your box? In any case, I was not able to find another set in internet - your set is the only one that come close to it.

Can I ask you how much did you pay for this set?
