The label, Burns' Poetical Works, on the spine is intact, lettering in gold, the fibers on the back are 90% intact and colors of the tartan are clearly visible, the fibers covering the spine are loose at the top and bottom, the fibers on the front are mostly intact around the edges but moderately loose on the front, colors are distinct. Gilt edge on pages are moderately worn, pages and illustrations in excellent condition. The owner's signature, Dorothy Planten, is visible on the second inside page, on the page preceding it, in the lower left hand corner is printed "Victoria". On the next page opposite the title page is a picture of Robert Burns (captioned). The title page contains the following: "The POETICAL WORKS of Robert Burns POEMS". Under the title is a circle enclosing a picture of Robert Burns. Under the picture are the words Glasgow: DAVID BRYCE AND SON. The first page in the book is not numbered and has the following heading "Prefactory Memoir" (for Robert Burns). It appears that no pages are missing, but the next page is numbered "6". The last page is numbered 535. The original background color for the tartan cover was probably white or cream with a plaid of black, red, gold/tan and green.
