I've seen this item valued fairly highly on some reselling sites but I wanted to see if I could get any extra input on whether or not it's worth anything. Thank you.
I’m not entirely sure where this came from or how old it actually, it was given to me by my mum who said she got it when she was a teenager but doesn’t have the best memory of where she was in the wold at the time. Since she’s in the late seventies, I guess it means they’re at least 50 years old.
One set side is carved from what I think is ivory but I’m not an expert; the other is wood. The pawn characters are kneeling but the rook, knight and bishop are characters riding a camel, a horse or an elephant and the queen and king are both on more elaborate elephants.
The set also comes with a wooden folding backgammon/chess board.
I have an old 4 board sugar chest I bought from a Habitat in Greensboro NC that was donated for sale by a family who said it was very valuable . It has the original key and locks very well. That's all the history I have on it. I have been told it could be pine or walnut although it is very heavy for pine. It looks as though the hinges have been replaced and the chain looks newer perhaps.
