Description

1840's antique journal - Complete with clippings of poems, bible verses, obituaries, newspaper clipping (one with photo of a granddaughter w/text), drawing of a quill/feather pen (which I'm sure is the one she was using to write). This person seemed to be very religious but also very modern in thinking, very artistic and poetic. Hand written quotations, notes, beliefs and ideas. He or she (I believe its a she) talks about how to be parents and raise a child, many different teachings and what he or she has learned, patience, how hard life can be etc. This isn't a daily entry diary/journal of day to day activities, although there are some dates in the entries, but it more of a composition of things learned, thoughts and beliefs at that time.

The book starts out with the drawing of the quill/feather pen and pasting from a newspaper about being Courteous -

"It will surprise many persons to learn that being pleasant is merely a matter of habit. it must be cultivated like every other good habit. It has its root in an unselfish desire for the happiness of others, not excluding one's own family. It will require a great effort at first to check the hasty words, hold the impertinent criticism, to speak truth in love, but it an effort that is well repaid by the results. Rudeness is never justifiable. It is sometimes necessary to reprove, to warn, to remonstrate, even to speak gravely and plainly of faults that should be corrected; all this can be done without encroaching in any way upon the courtesy that is due from one human being to another...."

The back inside cover features a drawing of 3 quill/feather pens and the year 1842 handwritten
