1915 Croutch & Fitzgerald flat top leather covered trunk.

By ynar, 21 January, 2010
Description

as to the best of my knowledge the trunk is from around 1915 made by the Crouch & Fitzgerald company in New York City. I have read that hey were thee most top quality trunk made in the USA at the time, up there with louis vuitton. the trunk has no visible wood that i can see, the slats are either solid leather or covered. The corners are of very thick 1/4" leather . the decorative metal on the corners looks to be steel? the lock and keeper look to be brass. there is no key to this trunk. the interior is in good shape covered in a tan canvas like material. all of the hardware including hinges is in great shape, the hasps are very strong, not much use.

Re: 1915 Croutch & Fitzgerald flat top leather covered trunk.

Here is the best I have been able to find:

Crouch & Fitzgerald are indeed was and still is top of the line

They are still in business, but of course do not sell trunks....I have attached a small bit of history on this company to this email

I found several examples of the same trunk for sale on the internet and the prices seemed to be anywhere from $500.00 to $1000.00. The trunks at the higher prices had been restored and were in perfect condition.

From the pictures you sent me, I can tell right off that this trunk needs a little work. And without contacting a trunk expert, I thought maybe that there were slat supports missing from around the outside and top of the trunk, it looks as if the leather needs reconditioning, etc.

If you want to get top dollar for this trunk, it would need to be restored, I am not sure what this would cost, you would need to contact a trunk restoration company, there are many on the internet and I could send you links to them.

If I personally had this trunk and was going to sell it, I would ask anywhere between $300.00 - $500.00 for it, and not restored the value would fall within this range

Hope this helps you!!
