1943 German king baveria's castle sword from WWII

By Anonymous (not verified), 20 May, 2007
Category
Militaria
Medium
iron, metal, bronze, gold, silver, steel
Distinguishing marks
. it is about 37 inches long from the point to the handle. under the handle the width of the sword is about 2 cm and 2 millimeters and at the tip of the point it is it slides into a black case that covers everything except the handle but it is scratched up a good bit. At the top of the black case right before it meets the handle is a iron ring that is not attached to the case but hooked to it and a square hook that is attached to the case. The handle is a bronze goldish color except for one part where you grip it is black and has bronze/goldish stripes that are iron and is twisted outlined in wire which is twisted and runs along either side of the stripe. if the sword were turned upright standing on the point...at the base of the handle where it covers the case in a 'U' shape is a picture of two swords crossed in an 'X' with leaves between the spaces. and when one turns it over to the other side on the 'U' shape is a shield looking thing except it looks like someone took smooth bites out of both sides because it is rounded inward on e/side of the shield and it is also surrounded w/leaves. at the very top of the sword is a 3D mold/carving of a lions head and if you were to hold the sword at someone it would be facing down. it is very well detailed. i can see the different hairs of the main and the eyes, ears, nose, eyebrows, whiskers. where the mouth is it looks as if the lion is bitting another part of the handle where it loops down into sort of an question mark shape if it were upright again standing on the point of the sword with the lion facing to your right. it has a leaf pattern with a cross inside a small circle. then farther on down that question mark shaped lower handle part is another picture of two swords crossed with the same shield with curved outer edges infront of them. this time there is a picture on the shield. it is an oval going north to south with an impression of very small twisted rope around it. at the top of this drawing between the two swords is a point to another sword and at the bottom of this drawing under the shield is a horseshoe with a square with a sm.star on it attached to the horseshoe on the curved part of it. then the square w/the star is attached to a handle. below that design is another one (still on the question mark shape) it is a small flower. very simple it has four petals and a circle inside. then as you move farther down the ? shape where the curved part becomes straight...there is just a long leaf design. There is a piece of the handle that makes the case stop just when its covered the whold sword. its a straight line w/a slight curve that becomes a ball on the side opposite the (?)question mark side. a leaf covers one side of the ball. below the main of the lions head is flower design in the center and it is outlined in a pretty frame and again w/another one and one leaf on either side facing up and down if the sword were standing on its point.

History
object is a sword. my grandfather said he got it in italy in 1943 in the king or baveria's castle. I believe it was during world war two. he said they ran the germans out and they just stayed in the castle and took the things they needed so this was not bought anywhere. it is about 37 inches long from the point to the handle. under the handle the width of the sword is about 2 cm and 2 millimeters and at the tip of the point it is it slides into a black case that covers everything except the handle but it is scratched up a good bit.
