It's very unlikely this desk dates from 1840. In todays market similar desks often sell at auction for less than $1500.00, most retail for under $4000.00. You can check somethning to help narrow down an age, for example most furniture made circa1850+ will have screws with pointed ends, earlier screws are flat on the end.
