Antique Community Plate Silver Teapot, Floral and Scroll engraved- Chelsea pattern

Description

This is a very delicately and intricately floral and scroll engraved silver teapot. The engraving encompasses the top and rim portions of the vessel with engraving and scrollwork on the handle and spout as well. The mark has three symbols: an Olde English "C" in an octagon followed by a winged gryphon? or creature on a shield followed by an Olde English "P" in an octagon. Under the symbols are the words "Community Plate" followed with "Chelsea" underneath. The teapot has a short round base.

On the website Silver Season you can see a 1940 catalogue of Community and Tudor Plate items. The "Chelsea" hollowware price list is in the third row down, fifth page from the left. This teapot was going for $17.50 retail in 1940. The earliest Community silver plate pattern dates from 1903 and is marked "Community Silver;" this was changed to "Community Plate" after WW I. The logo on your piece is a later version.
