Antique DESK w/ Inlays American Furniture Co Batesville Indiana

By ruzasyna, 30 September, 2021
Description

Hello!

I need help identifying and valuing this beautiful desk that belonged to my parents. They purchased it from an antique store in Freeport, Long Island when we moved there from Brentwood.

I don't know how much they paid for it but I have always loved it. Unfortunately, I doesn't fit iinto my NYC apartment and I will either need to sell, trash it or donate it. The hardware is original and the inlays are completely intact.

It's in fair condition but I imagine will look amazing if restored.

Thanks for your help!

Re: Antique DESK w/ Inlays American Furniture Co Batesville...

This company has roots going back to 1879 and has gone through a number of mergers. Pieces like this one tend to date from the first quarter of the 20th century and into the early 1930's when the Great Depression forced many companies into bankruptcy. Pieces made during this period tend to be a big mix of styles , which makes them look older than they really are. Values currently tend to be weak for furniture like this since it's last peak of popularity in the late 1980's. most comparable pieces sell at auction for under $150.00. Most are not actually desks, but vanities which have had their mirrors removed..
